What is junk mail?

Question:

Why do I get junk e-mail and advertising that I know I don’t want?

More information:

It’s just like read mail.  But much cheaper to send.

Just like junkmail for mortgages, etc.  They make up addresses, and send out the mail.

The mail filter program we use in the district does give you warnings by saying it was "BULK" mail.  If mail has an attachment, I don’t know the sender, it doesn’t have a good subject, I just delete it.  (I do the same with what looks like junk paper/snail mail at home).  The filter program can’t filter for that since there is not really much content to look for (it’s not much different when someone you know attaches a baby photo, says "HI" and sends it.  (It’s part of why I’m always encouraging people to use useful subject lines).

Opening the mail generlly doesn’t help, sometimes just viewing the graphic sets a trigger at the other end and now they know you may open mail, clicking on the remove me list (for somehting non-reputable) definately adds you to "good" list. This isn’t going to be true at REAL mail from Target or Borders, they will take you off their list.

This is probably one of the worse messages I’ve seen since the filter started (before then some started arriving with photos).

I uslually keep my Microsoft Outlook mail set at VIEW->CURRENT VIEW->MESSAGES WITH AUTO-PREVIEW. And if I don’t see any content in the message it’s that extra thing to confirm that I should delete it.

FYI on the past few weekends the filter has deleted 70-80% of the mail total labeling it as junk.  And marks another 10-15% as BULK/QUAR.  That’s how much junk/spam there is out there.

If you are getting mail from collegues that say bulk/quar you can add them to your filtering address book (see the help page) so that "approved users" don’t get marked that way.

My Outlook class, shows you how to ship all the bulk/quar mail to different folders so you only look at to make sure it doesn’t look real, and if it does I add it to that filter list.
