Mouse doesn’t work well

Question:

How can I make my mouse work better?

More information:

THIS INFORMATION IS ONLY FOR MICE WITH A BALL. All new mice (2006 and later) do not have a rubber ball that need cleaning. Make sure you use new mice on a flat opaque surface.

Mice can quickly become clogged with dust and dirt and stop working properly. Here are some instructions to help you do this.

  1. Turn the mouse on its back.

  2. Twist the ball cover on the mouse until the cover unlocks

  3. then remove the mouse ball.

  4. If you are having lots of problems (which is why you are here) you can probably see dust/lint inside the mouse or on the ball. Try and remove the pieces and/or blow into the mouse.

Assuming lots came out, reassemble the mouse and it should be working better. If not, report it like any other computer problem.

If the mouse still does not work, please turn the below information to your building media specialist who will then create a trouble ticket..

(Lost/stolen items are not to be reported, these are replaced at the building level).

If you’re feeling really ambitious you can check out the following steps:

  1. You may also need to pull out lint from around the ends of the rollers and clean the mouse ball itself.
  2. Inside the mouse are three rollers. Two of the rollers are at right angles to each other and only rotate. If either of these rollers are wobbly then the mouse may be broken and need to be replaced. The third roller is narrower and spring-loaded. This third roller will give slightly when you press it.

  3. Dirt can be removed from the rollers by carefully scraping them with your fingernail or a piece of firm paper. The end of a plastic top from a pen works well also. Make sure the dirt doesn’t fall into the mouse and be careful not to scratch the rollers. You will have to rotate the rollers and continue scraping.

  4. Never use liquids or cleaners in or near your mouse or computer.
